Welcome to Porthcawl Primary School              

Porthcawl Primary School is a mixed school for boys and girls between the ages of 3 to 11 years and includes a Foundation Phase teaching area admitting pupils of nursery age.

I am delighted to be able to provide you with a summary of the findings of the recent school inspection. This report details the findings of the inspection team which was lead by Dr. P. David Ellis. As a school, we are very pleased with the report of the inspection team. The report states that:

 

  • Porthcawl Primary School is a very effective school where standards, the quality of teaching, all aspects of provision and leadership and management are consistently good. 
  • Standards are well above the national averages published by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools where the school attained 96% against 84% nationally. 
  • The quality of teaching is well above the national averages published by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools where the school attained 93% against 83% nationally. 
  • The children make rapid progress in the foundation phase with children making very good progress towards the foundation phase outcomes. 
  • Throughout the school, learners are well motivated and have a very positive attitude to their work with very good behaviour observed. 
  • Learners work and play together very well and relationships with each other are very good. 
  • Teachers have high expectations, provide good role models and establish very positive relationships with learners. 
  • The school is well advanced in its planning for the foundation phase and the revised national curriculum. 
  • A positive strength of the school are the extra curricular activities. 
  • Effective early identification and diagnosis of those with additional learning needs and of the more able and talented are good features of the provision. 
  • All learners whatever their age, ability or background make good steady progress through the school, including those with English as an additional language and the more able. 
  • Learners take increasing responsibility for their own intellectual development and are not hesitant to come to their own decisions. 
  • The learners know their individual targets and understand how well they are progressing. 
  • Parents agree that they find it easy to approach the school with questions or problems concerning their children. 
  • Learners are encouraged to support each other within the school community, take on responsibilities and show initiative. This is an outstanding feature of the school. 
  • Good attention is given to learners' health and wellbeing. 
  • Arrangements to encourage good behaviour are very effective. 
  • Class teachers and other staff know learners and their needs very well and good quality pastoral care is a beneficial feature of the school. 
  • The school building is in good order and the accommodation both inside and outside is kept very clean and well maintained. 
  • Learners make good progress in their reading skills. By the end of Key Stage One, most read with understanding, clarity and fluency. In Key Stage Two, nearly all develop into accurate competent readers with well developed higher order reading skills.  
  • In writing, pupils in Key Stage One undertake an extensive range of writing activities whilst nearly all pupils at Key Stage Two develop into fluent writers with evidence of some outstanding features.
  •  Within the Foundation Phase, the areas of learning were all graded good with no important shortcomings or good with outstanding features.

 

As a school we are happy to report that standards in all areas are at least Good with no important shortcomings and Good with outstanding features in many areas.
